Scene
SCENE — Clinton Island, Elmira. A procession of young Ladies and Gentlemen, marching to a bower in the following order: First — the venerable figure of an old man. to personify Labor . Next, two females. in plain habits, represent Temperance and Frugality . Two others, Justice and Liberty , come next, with the scales, sword and standard. A company of Fluviales , with bands of twisted grass on their heads and sea-green sashes, and Dryades , with wreaths of natural flowers and pink sashes, bring up the rear. Gentlemen walk on each side as guards.
Under the bower, and or an elevated seat, a young lady, in sumptuous attire, represents the Genius of America ; with the eagle perched on a bough over her head. On her right hand sits Minerva ; with her helmet and plume; on the left Hercules , with his club. Two young ladies, representing Ceres (crowned with poppies) and Pomona (with the leaves of the apple tree) bring a variety of wreaths to be distributed among the competitors.
