The monument was discovered in October 1927 by Eric Thompson and named by him as Stela 2 (Thompson 1928b:97), Gann referred to the monument as Stela D (Joyce et al. 1928:331). The monument was discovered fragmented and is composed of four fragments (fragments 1 to 4) (Thompson 1928b:97; Morley 1937-1938, IV:37). Fragment 2 was in its original position in the ground at an angle when it was discovered, the other three fragments were lying face up on the ground (Morley 1937-1938, IV:37). To reduce the weight of the fragments (1, 2, and 4) for their transport to London, Gann had the unsculptured base of fragment 2 cut off in 1929 (Joyce 1929:452).
