The fragment, discovered by Gann in either 1927 or 1928, is sculpted on one side with a series of hieroglyphs and can thus be identified as the central part of the original stele (Gann 1928a: 148; Morley 1937-1938, IV:22). This is the only surviving fragment of Stele Q to date. When it was discovered, the fragment was lying on the ground with the inscribed broadside (back) facing downwards. The opposite broadside (front) had been exposed to the weather and shows core signs of sculpting (Morley 1937-1938, IV:22).
